NEPHILIM

NEPHILIM

Matthew 24:37 prophecies that the coming of the Lord will resemble the days of Noah. Therefore, it is essential to study the exact events in Noah’s time.

The story of Noah can be found in Genesis 6. The problem is Genesis 6 introduces a fascinating, enigmatic and hard to interpret Giants or mighty beings known as Nephilim.

SONS OF GOD
Most translations of verse 2 render “sons of God,” whereas the Good News Translation (GNT) interprets this phrase as “Heavenly beings.”

Many bible interpreters showcase the “sons of God” in verse 2 as the fallen angels. This interpretation is saying the fallen angels took up the human body, sexed with beautiful daughters of human beings and produced the Nephilim or Giants as the descendants.

If the Nephilim or giants were the descendants of fallen angels mating with humans, it would lead to several biblical discrepancies and misalignment. These include:

1) ANAKITES
After the flood, the Giants/ Nephilim are still around (Numbers 13:33). In fact, Genesis 6:4 is saying the giants are there “and afterwards”. And Number 13:33 suggests that the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim. It can be known as Anakites (Deuteronomy 2:11/ 21-21).

This implies that God’s plan to wipe up and destroy mankind through the flood does not completely eliminate the Nephilim or Anakites, while Joshua successfully defeated and destroyed them (Joshua 11:21-22). As a result, one might perceive Joshua as more powerful and effective than God’s flood in eliminating these giants.

2) UNJUST JUDGE
If powerful fallen angels are the one corrupts humanity, yet God punishes humanity instead of the angels, it seems God is unjust. Why punish the victims, rather than the perpetrators? This is akin to a court punishing a rape victim while freeing the rapist.

3) FLOOD MANKIND
The scripture is clear. God’s intent to flood humanity, not angels, and expresses regret for creating mankind. It does not state that “God regretted creating angels.” God even limited mankind’s lifespan to 120 years, recognizing their mortality as flesh.

Again, if angels had sinned through interbreeding, why does divine justice demand harshly on mankind rather than the culprit (Which is the angels)? This suggests that the “sons of God” mentioned in verse 2 may not refer to angels.

4) NOAH
Genesis 6:8 states Noah found grace or favor in God’s eyes, suggesting a distinction between him and the rest of his generation. Likewise, 2 Peter 2:5 refers to Noah as a preacher of righteousness. The word “Preacher” denotes Noah’s deed was not just righteous, but he has been sharing against unrighteous living.

Should the sons of God were the fallen angels, how can Noah, being a mortal human being, which is less strong than angels have the power to resist corruption with angels? Again, this suggests the sons of God should be mankind, not angelic beings.

SECOND PETER’S ACCOUNT
Some people are using 2 Peter to justify “the sons of God” mentioned in Genesis 6 as the fallen angels that had sex with human beings.

2 Peter 2:4-9 is a rich and complex passage with several historical examples packed into one single; overarching sentence. This one single sentence, from full stop to full stop, outlines several events in several verses as below:

  • God does not spare angels when they sinned but threw them in chains of the darkness for judgment. (2 Peter 2:4)
  • God bright flood to mankind on His ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and family (2 Peter 2:5)
  • God condemns Sodom and Gomorrah but rescue Lot a righteous man, who is distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless (2 Peter 2:6-8)
  • In verse 9, Peter ties it all together past events and judgment, affirming that God is both just in punishing the unrighteous deeds and faithful in saving the godly.

It is important to note that these events, occurring at different times. Unless Christians claim that the events of Sodom and Gomorrah also took place during Noah’s generation.

Should any believers taking a verse or half a verse from a single sentence of 2 Peter 2:4-9 shall misinterpret the angels’ judgment as happening during Noah’s time. That creates a theological error. It distorts Peter’s central point about God’s unchanging principles of consistently punishing the unrighteous while saving the righteous. Those events were not chronological. 2 Peter 2:4-9 does not suggest God’s punishment on angels was in Noah’s generation.

INTERPRETATION
How should Genesis 6 be interpreted is that “The sons of God” are referring to God’s sons (God people). And “the daughters of man”, is referring to non-God people. To be exact, those God people in that era should be children of Seth.

Hence, Genesis 6 is talking about God’s children and non believers intermarriage. In fact, either under Mosaic law or New Testament, these are not allowed.

After the Great Flood, only Noah and his family survived. The Anakites, Jebusites, Amorites, and Canaanites, while potentially Noah’s descendants, but not being God’s children. Those are arrogant, “giant” in size, in attitudes, and behaviors against God. However, no record found that the angels continue union with human beings to produce the Anakites, Jebusites, Amorites, and Canaanites.

Hence, Matthew 24 is talking about believers’ inter-faith marriage or unequally yoked. The phrase “The Nephilim are on the earth in those days—and also afterward” in Genesis 6:4 is saying believers and nonbelievers are constantly unequally yoked in interfaith marriages during Noah’s generation and now.

What Jesus is saying in Matthew 24 is that Christians are enjoying worldly pleasant, happiness in interfaith marriages than preparing for His coming spiritually. Amenbible

Some contemporary interpretations propose that St. Paul’s messages are directed exclusively at Gentiles, while the Epistles of Hebrews, Peter and James, etc are intended for Jewish believers.
