WILL THE WRATH OF GOD AND HIS PUNISHMENT FALL ON CHRISTIANS?

Back to Main Page
Modern teaching has been saying the wrath or punishment of God cannot come on Christians. This argument is saying that the same sin can not be punished twice. Since all believers’ sins have been punished on Jesus, it can’t be judged or punished on believers again. If it is not so, God can’t answer to Jesus.

However, a handful of new testimony scriptures suggest otherwise. These verses do not just appear in New Testimony. These letters were directed to early church leaders then. And were being read to the church congregation. Colossians chapter 3 is saying: “the WRATH OF GOD comes to believers that live in a sinful life”

(Colossians 3:5-13)
5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
6 Because of these, THE WRATH OF GOD is coming.
7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.
8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these
anger,
rage,
malice,
slander, and
filthy language from your lips.
9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices
10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
12 THEREFORE, as God’s chosen people, HOLY and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. (NIV)

Colossians 3:5-13

There again, the book of Ephesians chapter 5 reveals that the WRATH OF GOD comes to those disobedient believers who live sinful life. Not only that, verse 7 tells believers, not to partner with them

(Ephesians 5:3-11)
3 But among you there MUST NOT be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are IMPROPER for God’s holy people.
4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater —HAS ANY INHERITANCE IN THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST AND OF GOD.
6 LET NO ONE DECEIVE you with empty words, for because of such things GOD’S WRATH COMES on those who are disobedient.
7 Therefore do not be partners with them.
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
10 and find out what pleases the Lord.
11 Have NOTHING to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather EXPOSE THEM. (NIV)
Ephesians 5:3-11
Furthermore, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 is saying God WILL PUNISH unholy living believers

(1 Thessalonians 4:3-7)
3 It is God’s will that YOU SHOULD BE SANCTIFIED:
that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4 that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God;
6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will PUNISH all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.
7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. (NIV)

1 Thessalonians 4:3-7

Surprise to see, that these modern teachings are saying “HOLINESS AND SANCTIFICATION” is a gift and gift alone. It has nothing to do with believers’ lifestyles. Nevertheless, 1 Thessalonians 4:3 clearly outlines “YOU SHOULD BE SANCTIFIED.” By saying so, it means Christians are not altogether “sanctified”.

In case, some might like to argue that “sanctification” is “automatically”, Apostle Paul spells out to be sanctified by “Avoiding living sexually immoral life” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-7). Besides, Christians are told to “Put to death” all those sinful acts (Col 3:5). Which means “Sanctification and Holiness” need actions.
The author of the Book of Hebrew gives a direct statement that God will judge the adulterer and all sexual immorality.
(Hebrews 13:4) 4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for GOD WILL JUDGE the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. (NIV)
Hebrews 13:4

There again, some are saying the word “Repentance” is “Change of mind”.

Nevertheless, 2 Corinthians 12:20-21 highlights that repentance is not just “Change of mind”. It requires “action”.

(2 Corinthians 12:20-21)
20 For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.
21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be GRIEVED OVER MANY WHO HAVE SINNED EARLIER and HAVE NOT REPENTED of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged. (NIV)
2 Corinthians 12:20-21

CONCLUSION

The Bible doesn’t say those not living right are “PROFESSING” Christians. What the bible is saying, after accepting Him as the Lord and Savior, believers have to live a new life. Not living a sinful, disobedient life.
Yes, Jesus says “neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more”. Jesus forgives believers, and expects them  “GO AND SIN NO MORE.” Christians are living in “GO AND SIN NOT MORE.” This is not an escape clause for believers to (continue) to live in sin and proclaim “Neither do I condemn you”.

Salvation is a journey, a walk with Him daily.

PRAYER

Father God, today as I heard your voice, let me not harden my heart. Let my heart and thoughts truly bow down to You and to Your living word and not bow down to sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed which is idolatry that attracts Your wrath. Let me truly get rid of all these unwanted qualities and live a life that pleases You.

Holy Spirit, You are the daily Helper I need. I pray that You strengthen, and empower me. Draw me back to You. Draw me back to Your blessings, favor ground. In Jesus’ victorious Name I pray. Amen
